David Holmes: The Holy Pictures

Though intended as a tribute to his Belfast roots, Holmes’s fourth solo album so often features the fashionable motorik beat of Seventies German rock that one wonders if he grew up near an autobahn.

Yet this evocative collection explores successfully how music sparks the imagination, ranging from pumping single Heard Wonders and the brisk title track to the blank solo piano of The Ballad of Sarah and Jack. More fun than that suggests, it’s like hanging out in a Seventies record shop.
