A sensational opening volley of new Noel Gallagher songs establishes a standard it can’t quite sustain. But for the main part, Oasis’s first album in over three years comes close.
BAG IT UP
Four-to-the-floor opening shot features a multi-tracked Liam Gallagher declaring, “I’m gonna take a walk with the monkey man.” Monster chorus can’t even be derailed by the questionable claim, “I’ve got my heebeegeebees in a little bag.” Should distinguish itself as an instant live favourite when the UK tour begins on Tuesday.
THE TURNING
One of Oasis’s most atmospheric recordings. Moody electric piano gives way to affirmative come-ons on a series of increasingly rock-tastic choruses. Cheeky Dear Prudence-style coda heralds the beginning of a series of Beatles borrowings, thankfully more artfully deployed than on previous occasions.
WAITING FOR THE RAPTURE
Intro reminiscent of The Doors Five To One gives way to a Noel third-person account of being ensnared by a predatory woman. Dave Sardy’s production cleverly allows the needle to stay firmly in the red – although any sonic bombast is once again trumped by an excellent chorus.
THE SHOCK OF THE LIGHTNING
The first single from the album. Pacey, energized delivery from Liam, coupled with a performance that recalls 1995’s Morning Glory. As a result, probably the song most likely to find favour with fans of “vintage” Oasis.
I’M OUTTA TIME
Liam’s first and best contribution to the album. Featuring a sample of John Lennon’s final interview at the end, the song itself is a tender love song which deploys several key Lennonisms in its instrumentation. Hard to equate such open-hearted sensitivity with the man who, in a recent interview, declared, “SpongeBob SquarePants is a mental, full-of-beans sponge. He’s mad for it.”
The moment your toes touch the sand and your gaze meets water, you know you’re in the Bahamas.

not that impressed, first four tunes are good but it's nothing compared to what they used to churn out.
carla, glasgow,
I must be a bit different to everyone else. Love the album, but I actually enjoy the second half more. Andy and Gem's tracks are brilliant and break the album up really well. Adds another dimension to it all. As I said, I must be a bit different, I still rate Be Here Now.
Glen, Adelaide, Australia
Ok, I think what we have here is a decent offering with a couple of excellent tunes, namely the opening track and "Get of your high horse lady"...
However I believe the album has been let down by Liam, Andy and Gem's offerings (bar Liams opening melodoc number which is quite nice)....
Brendan, Cork, Ireland
A very honest review, as an owner of every Oasis album to date i have to say that this is some of their best work for a few years.People have to remember that their sound has changed since the early days when they were young, edgy and innocent!! bands elvolve, so sit back and enjoy a genius at work
phil platt, st.helens,
I agree that it's more experimental, but song for song it's not nearly as good as Don't Believe the Truth, which the press seem to be dissing suddenly, despite it receiving good reviews and the Q album of the year in 2005. The last four tracks of Dig Out Your Soul (not written by Noel) are weak.
Mark, Poole, England
Forget the haters - this is a brilliant album, and as Matt says can now sit alongside DF and WTSMG proudly. The last one hinted at a major return to form and this confirms it. Watch it skyrocket I'd say.
Neil, Dublin, Ireland
This is all great but let us see how long it takes this time for them to get on tour and beat the hell out of one another. Irregardless, I love their music.
McClain, Flint, Mi, USA
That's a great review.
It's a great album from Oasis and one that finally sits proudly alongside Definitely Maybe and Morning Glory after nearly 13 years of waiting!
Matt, Inverness, UK
This is really dissapoitining, I thought Oasis' new album would be the the new Definitely Maybe, like everoyne said. To me, there are no epic songs on this, except for maybe bag it up. That really is the only song that KIND OF stand out. What happened to Masterplan, DLBIA, Slide Away esque songs?
Richard, Markham, Canada
Having witnessed Oasis tour definetely maybe at Irvine beach many moons ago I have been disappointed with every album since. Noel is great for tabloid soundbites but lost his edge as a songwriter as soon as the money started rolling in. Its a familiar tale!
bill mackay, London,
"To Be Where There's Life"? Does Pat Metheny do a solo on that one?
Brian, Barnstable, MA , US
good review Pete although you should really be aware that track 6 - (Get off Your) High Horse Lady is sung by Noel and not Liam.......
Phil, London,
Here we go again with the hype. Every album since Morning Glory has been announced by critics as a return to form, which with hindsight has proved way of the mark. I suspect the same will happen here.
Chris, London, UK
Ive only heard the single on the radio which to be honest I found a bit bland and unexciting. I've come to expect better from Oasis, however this is an interesting review. I'll have to check it out and see how the whole album is
Martin, York, U.K.
Its a top album
I'd say its up there with Definitley maybe
Morning Glory still the best album ever
Only dodgy track i think is the Nature of Reality
Other than that top stuff
Just hope Pink doesnt beat them in the album chart as well as he singles lol
Johan, Wellington, New Zealand
You are confusing your 1966 Beatles songs - the drum rhythm on Falling Down is the same as Tomorrow Never Knows , and that on To Be Where There's Life is like Rain. The rhythm on get Off Your High Horse is similar to Give Peace A Chance even though that was not Ringo.
Tim , London, UK
Sounds like Liam not noel on Get of yr high hourse lady
