Jacqueline du Pré: Elgar

Six months before her famous hothouse EMI recording of the Elgar cello concerto, Jacqueline du Pré played the work at the 1964 Proms, conducted by Sir Malcolm Sargent.

The temperature is a little cooler, but that throbbing cello voice is still inimitable. Two British rarities fill out this archive collection. Thumbs up for Rubbra’s resonant sonata; thumbs sideways for Priaulx Rainier’s arid and brittle Cello Concerto, a novelty that du Pré never played again.
