A mere 15 years in the making, Chinese Democracy is an absurd curate’s egg of an album, with the majority of tracks clocking in at the five- or six-minute mark, each of them bloated with guitar solos that seem to say “Who needs Slash when you’ve got licks like these?”, and all travelling across such a multiplicity of genres that the achievement of the sole remaining member, Axl Rose, comes across as less to do with unfettered inventiveness than with flailing, try-anything desperation. More revealing still is the constant switching of vocal styles: Robert Plant, Shirley Bassey, Willie Nelson and Larry Blackmon are just four of the singers Rose apes. Of the 14 songs here, only Better, Scraped and Riad N’ the Bedouins have the menacing swagger of old. Worth the wait? I think not.

I'm not sure that this review makes a tremendous amount of sense. I happen to think the album is extraodinary, but it certainly is not sub-par.
Let's say just this: The Killers "Day and Age" got four stars and Chinese Democracy has gotten two. I mean, really.
I just wanted to say that.
Nick LaRocca, Delray Beach, US
The album's incredible and definitely worth the wait. My favorite gnr song is estranged so, i inevitably love this album. It's an epic album of monumental proportions. Axl should be remembered as the greatest artist of all time
Matt Shop, New Orleans, USA
i sooooooooooo love it...Axl is better than when i saw him in 88...no wonder this took 16 years...its almost up there with Pete Townsends Tommy...good job Axl...dont take so long on the next one
scott ulrici, sacramento , usa
I would disagree with this review the album is actually really good. I've not really been a GNR fan since they released Lies in the late 80s, but I was interested to hear what had taken Axl 13 years to record. I was pleasantly surprised, there are some great tracks suck as 'Better' and 'Madagascar'.
Pam, Glasgow,
i love the album. i have been a G n' R fan for over 20 years and think the album is fab!!!! if you dont like "them bloated with guitar solos" then don't buy it. that is what G n' R does...guitar solos with or without Slash! way 2 go Axl! i'd wait another 15 years if i had 2. your true fan, Yvonne
Yvonne, Spotsylvania, VA, USA
im huge gnr fan ...this is album difrient,it took a long time to make ,so offcourse the songs are not reg rock tunes with all the wait an hype it had to be diffirent,,,and llike sombody said before it grows on you
sebastian, valley stream,
The album is great, Axl's vocals are astonishing and it would appear that only pretentious critics have a hard time conceding that. As to the Chinese gentleman taking offence - the album has nothing whatsoever to do with China in any way shape or form - it's just meant to be ironic.
Jake, Sydney,
I'd probably take Dan's opinion with a pinch of salt and try to take this album for what it is: over indulgent, absurd and ridiculously over produced, but... I love it!
It takes me back to being a teenager. Think what you may of the guy, but there's not many out there who can do it like Axl can!
Steve, Newcastle, UK
I think that this is a really great album, however the only problem with it is that it took 15 years to come out. If Chinese Democracy was released in, say, 1995, everyone would have loved it. But after nearly two decades of waiting, it became more of a joke instead of an Appetite for Destruction.
Treva, Boston,
it might take some time but it grows on you.
i think the album is great, id give it 4.5 stars!!
ed, beirut,
i'm a huge original Gn'r fan, and was kinda worried what the album would sound like being just axl rose... but after listening, i think alot of songs could easily fall on the use your illusion albums, i think too many people are trying to compare this to the revolutionary appetite for destruction!
Jason, north charleston, sc, USA
i had low hopes of the album without izzy, duff and slash contributing their amazing guitar parts.
but it wasn't bad at all. i'd give it 8/10.
it was ruined by a couple of songs that were too synthesised for me.
steve, weymouth, England
Of course it doesn't sound like the old GnR, its not the old GnR, it is a damn good rock n roll album though and a sound that no present bad seems able to replicate........
Just my thoughts....
James, London, England
They think they speak for Chinese people. But all my friends hate them now. I feel very insulted by the lyrics as a Chinese who lived in Beijing for more than twenty years. I am tired to western point of view about China in general. It seems that no westerners care about the progress in China.
Jing, Middelburg, Netherlands
It's funny that critics can't admit that the album is actually very good.
Why keep comparing it with the previous albums? This is a 2008 album and sounds like it.
Axl laughs last, lol.
Jorge, Furzton,
I could not disagree more. This album is clear departure and maturing for Axel. To me it shows that in 15 years he never forgot what makes good music, he never got stagnant and reinvented GNR music. Nice Job Axel Thank you.
David Martinez, Hillsborough, USA
At least Axl didn't kill himself like beloved Kurt Cobain...
Joe, Queens, NY, USA
I was a 10 year old when Appetite was released. I would have liked there to have been a more complete version of the orginal band, but that didn't happen. There is great guitar...even if it isn't Slash!! I am also very impressed with the vocal range!
Trisha, Metamora, USA
I'm a long time fan of the band. I heard the album and loved it.
Donny, Guelph Ontario, Canada
Dan, I heard the leaks and the Myspace streams. It's a great album ... displaying the maturity that Axl has gone through. The 1980's are long ago. If Zeppelin came out with a new album today, it will not sound the same either. So stop wearing your cutoff denim jacket and get with the times.
GNR Fan, Ft Lauderdale, USA
It has the same band name but that's it. You shouldn't be expecting another Appetite because you will be sadly disappointed. You have to look at the music for itself and what it represents in the industry...and in that respect its phenomenal!!!

Paul, New York, USA
bloted guitar solos? i think Dan didn't really get what Guns N Roses became after Appetite For Destruction. The solos and extravagance in the music, the true artistic signature of Guns N Roses.
Constant different vocal directions? Proof that Axl is not a 1 trick pony. Respect where its deserved
