One of the hits of the London Jazz Festival, the energetic Italian marching band carries the alfresco genre a long way from the New Orleans second line. There are long passages where the influence of James Brown’s longtime associate Maceo Parker is unmistakable. A hint of Zappa, too. If the compositions are sometimes a little functional, the sprawling reeds section kicks up the dust, and artists of the calibre of the saxophonist David Liebman sit in on a number or two. There’s a hint of Paolo Conte’s Mediterranean swing on the gruff vocals of Io Vivo. Trying to squeeze the formula into the confines of a disc is a thankless task, but you get the drift.
