Thames Shipwrecks: A Race Against Time

BBC Two, 8pm

With most commercial traffic long removed to container ports, it is easy to forget that the Thames in East London was once the hub of Empire, the busiest shipping lane in the world, an aquatic cross between the M25 and a heaving railway terminal. Frank Pope and Tessa Dunlop present the concluding part of two, as marine archaeologists race to recover seven significant Thames shipwrecks. This week they try to salvage the Dovenby, a beautiful 19th-century steel sailing ship that once roamed the globe carrying goods and materials. There is a mystery ship full of pottery, tools and goods, and that workhorse of the River, the Thames barge, provides the hook to explore the history of the London docks.

Secrets of the Jesus Tomb

Five, 8pm

The tomb in question was discovered in 1980, so if it had contained some earth-shattering Da Vinci Code revelation we would probably have heard about it by now, and it certainly isn't the first time that the story has been told on British television. A set of 2,000-year-old ossuaries, apparently from the same family, were discovered in a cave during excavations in a Jerusalem suburb. One was inscribed Jesus son of Joseph and another Mary. Could this be the Jesus (it was a fairly common name), in which case what happened to the Ascension? Was he with Mary Magdalene? Were they married? The analysis is interesting enough, just don't expect to have your religious beliefs turned upside down.

Mutual Friends

BBC One, 9pm

Either this quirky drama-comedy hybrid is beginning to find its rhythm or I'm just getting used to it. After last week's shock revelation that Jen (Keeley Hawes) had had sex with the deceased best friend of her husband Martin (Marc Warren), the couple really want to get back together, but each believes that the other one doesn't. A series of neatly organised misunderstandings keep it that way, some of them engineered by the deeply irresponsible Patrick (Alexander Armstrong) who wants Martin to join him in misspending his lost youth. All the lead characters are flawed but somehow likeable, just like real people. Richard Pinto and Anil Gupta's script is full of deft twists and turns and segues effortlessly from humour to genuine angst.

The Secret Millionaire

Channel 4, 9pm

This is often a curiously revealing series. The needy groups and individuals discovered by the incognito millionaires may need financial help, but meeting them and providing that help often turns out to be a kind of therapy for the benefactors. Daniel Smith is only 26, but he was a millionaire at 22 and collapsed in a metaphorical heap last year, apparently, after hitting a brick wall of stress and exhaustion. Where better to recuperate than a council block in the Elephant and Castle in south London? Daniel's explorations centre on projects for the homeless, including a day-centre, a choir, a farm and a team who get people sleeping rough into hostels. It's a very smart way of interesting audiences in the predicament of the down-and-out.
