Our Man in Havana (1960)
Five, 1.55pm
Fidel Castro’s incoming revolutionary Government proved a blessing for the director Carol Reed, granting him permission to shoot this wry adaptation of Graham Greene’s tragicomic novel on location in Cuba. Alec Guinness plays a nondescript vacuum cleaner salesman who begins passing bogus Cold War secrets back to British Intelligence. Noël Coward, Ralph Richardson and Maureen O’Hara co-star. (111min)
The Producers (2005)
Five, 7.30pm
From screen to stage and back again, this remake of the much-loved 1968 Mel Brooks classic began life as a hugely successful Broadway and West End musical. Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick play cynical Jewish impresarios who score an unexpected smash hit with their deliberately tasteless, Nazi-themed musical. The original film’s audacious comic zing is diluted, but Will Ferrell and Uma Thurman deliver strong cameos. (134min)
Braveheart (1995)
Channel 4, 9pm
Mel Gibson’s revisionist biopic of the Scottish warrior William Wallace is riddled with inaccuracies and preposterous Hollywood fabrications, but it still blasts along with enjoyably deranged action-hero energy. Gibson stars and directs, depicting Wallace as an anti-English 14th-century freedom fighter with football hooligan face-paint. (178min)
The Weather Man (2005)
BBC One, 10.20pm
Nicolas Cage’s TV meteorologist juggles sunny career prospects with a stormy personal life in this sweet but insubstantial comic drama. Cage’s emotionally distressed hero is struggling to deal with a failed marriage, troublesome children and an ill father, played by Michael Caine. (101min)
Cinderella Man (2005)
BBC Two, 10pm
Four years after making A Beautiful Mind together, Russell Crowe reunited with the director Ron Howard for this stirringly sentimental Depression saga. Crowe lost over three stone to play a down-at-heel Irish-American boxer fighting his way back from poverty. Co-stars Renée Zellweger, Paul Giamatti and Paddy Considine make Howard’s schmaltzy excesses just about bearable. (144min)
Bad Timing (1980)
BBC Two, 12.15am
Nicolas Roeg’s torrid, sexually explicit love story was virtually disowned on release by the Rank studio, with one executive memorably calling it “a sick film made by sick people for sick people”. Art Garfunkel and Theresa Russell play obsessive lovers in Vienna; Harvey Keitel the suspicious detective investigating their tragic final fight. (123min)
