Maureen Lipman, who once played the proud Jewish mother Beattie in the 1980s BT commercials, has admitted she took the hallucinogenic drug LSD, as well as cannabis.

The confession of her acid trip is in a three-part TV documentary series on Five, which begins next Monday, December 1.

“I took it once and rather unpredictably ended up with somebody I shouldn’t have,” says Lipman on the programme, Sex, Drugs and Rock’n’Roll: The 60s Revealed. “Funnily enough, I saw him the other day in a Notting Hill butchers.”

Lipman, whose collection of stories, Past-It Notes, has just been published, said this weekend: “In the 1960s, if you were, like me, green and from Hull, you had to keep up with your peer group in London.”

Lipman, whose roles have included a portrayal of Joyce Grenfell and a part in the Roman Polanski film, The Pianist, admits she never “actually learnt to roll a joint. I guess it was that Jewish princess stuff”.

Cilla Black is also asked if she took drugs. “Everybody was tripping out . . . but not me,” she says.

In the series, stars return to comment on interviews unseen since they were conducted in the 1960s.

In 1967, Sir Sean Connery, then James Bond but now a Scottish National party supporter, said: “I’d rather live here in England than in Scotland. I can put up with the English.”

Connery left England not long after and his main home is now the Bahamas.
