One of the Church of England’s most senior bishops has compared the consecration of a gay bishop in America to the invasion of Iraq.
Tom Wright, the bishop of Durham and the fourth most senior in the English hierarchy, said both events showed Americans were prepared to act “how they please” with disregard for the rest of the world.
Gene Robinson, the homosexual American prelate whose appointment in 2003 led to the present crisis in the church, has compared his torment with the taunts endured by Christ at his trial.
Wright’s comments came at the Lambeth conference, the 10-yearly meeting of Anglican bishops, being held in Canterbury. Wright, who represents moderate conservative clerics who, rather than schism, want provision within the church for conservatives opposed to gay clergy and women bishops, said: “George Bush said he was going to invade Iraq. Everyone told him not to because there would be consequences, but he did it anyway.
“The Americans floated the balloon in 2003 when they consecrated Gene Robinson as bishop of New Hampshire. They knew exactly what they were doing then and they know exactly what they are doing now. They knew it would be unacceptable to the majority of the Communion. They are doing exactly as they please.”
He continued: “Either the rest of the world caves in or someone has to stand up to them.”
Robinson, 61, speaking before Wright’s comments, said of the row over his sexuality: “I always wondered why Jesus was silent at his own trial, but now I understand. When evil and criticism come your way and the temptation to return the evil is so strong, the best thing is to let it stop with you.”
Last night, the Vatican warned the Church of England that the dispute over gay ordination posed a “grave challenge to the hope for full and visible unity” between the churches.
It came in a letter from Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, secretary of state at the Vatican, ranked second only to the Pope.

Bishop Tom was *not* saying the consecration of Gene Robinson was morally equivalent to an act of war, but that the Liberal wing of the Episcopalian church are pursuing what he sees as a comparatively illegal and aggressive assault on the Anglican communion. A strong statement, but not a stupid one.
Blithe , Durham, UK
Bishop Nazir-Ali should take over the Anglican church in England, or the sodomites will be the cause of God's punishment . The Bible is very clear about the sin of sodomy.

Please watch the documentary "For the Bible Tells Me So."
This literal reading of the bible by some within the church as an excuse to discriminate against homosexuals is the real sin. Where is your indignation on working on the Sabbath, eating shellfish, etc., etc.?
Sue, Maryland, USA
Mark 3:25 says; "And if a house becomes divided against itself, that house will not be able to stand."
Bob, Ramsgate, Kent
Where oh where does the Bible say that love is a sin? What sin would the homophobes have Bishop Robinson repent of? Should Episcopal Bishop Shori be required to repent of being born female? Would the conservatives be happier if Robinson were closeted and hypocritical? This is all such nonsense.
Larry, Iowa, USA
so he is up there on the cross with Jesus and Madonna....I can think of thousands ...no millionswho would have more right to this claim but would never do so.Humility is not a word that springs easily to mind with regard to these two overprivelledged and overated people

And just a question, who is the third most senior Bishop in England???

'Bishop' Robinson, Please read Matthew 13:24-30 and when you have understood the word of God, repent of all of your sins.
AN, UK, UK
Aside from it being the most ridiculous analogy ... I'm always struck by how un-Christ-like some so-called Christians can be.
Bob Shore, Buffalo, NY,
So, rescuing the people of an oppressed military state and fighting against terrorism are equivalent to ordaining a Sodomite bishop and thumbing one's nose at the rest of the Communion? Words fail me.
Jonathan, Albany, NY, USA
So an illegal invasion and mass murder are equivalent to the people of New Hampshire choosing a man they have known and loved for almost 30 years as their bishop?
Words fail me.
Doxy, Raleigh, USA
The bishop of Durham needs to separate the "new Episcopals" in America from most Yanks and British ex-pats! Were he to walk the streets of America and visit those churches that left the Episcopal Church after it deviated from Anglicanism in 1979, he would feel right at home!
Bob Evans, Anaheim, California
And who pays the bills?
How much money comes from the USA and how much money comes from Africa?
Arik Silverman, Milwaukee, USA
If it weren't for the Archbishop of Canterbury, this would be in the running for the stupidest remark of the century (so far).
Marc, Chicago, USA
Well done Bishop Wright-more more, Jude 1:4 'Some people have slipped in among you unnoticed. Not long ago they were condemned in writing for the following reason: They are people to whom God means nothing. They use God's kindness as an excuse for sexual freedom and deny Lord, Jesus Christ.'
