If there was a collective noun for beauty editors, what would it be? A buff of beauty editors? A preen? A gloss? A Botox? What-ever the answer, there’s going to be one at Selfridges in London on September 20 for its special Beauty Editors’ Day. Loads of us, literally all over the shop, including, for the first time, yours truly.
Why? You might well ask. For charity, that’s why. Specifically, the Look Good Feel Better charity (www.lgfb.co.uk), dedicated to helping women with cancer cope with the side effects of treatment: hair loss, skin sensitivity, low self-esteem – all are issues that confront the majority of patients, and LGFB is there to help. It is a non-profit organisation that operates free nationwide workshops. Patients receive hands-on advice from beauty professionals on coping with changes in their appearance, as well as advice on the safety and suitability of products and treatments. At the end of each session, they take home a free goodie bag. It’s just a small thing, but hopefully it helps.
The Beauty Editors’ Day is dedicated to raising money for LGFB. Every counter will have a journalist attached to it, the idea being that we will be on hand to provide advice and insight to you, our dear readers. Organisationally, it’s a fraught process, a bit like getting picked for the netball team at school. Some editors get their bids in early; others lobby hard; others have tantrums if they don’t like their allocation (no names mentioned, of course). Others, like me, skulk at the back of the room.
Luckily, I’m on the Origins team. I love Origins: its products are simple but effective, its website one of the best in the business and its customer service is second to none (you actually get a real live person on the end of the telephone). I am a huge fan of its eccentric but effective Dr Weil’s Mega-Mushroom range.
That’s the sell, here’s the deal: tickets cost £20. For that, you will receive a back, hand and arm massage and a “healthy habit” consultation, plus I will be on hand to dispense beauty and skincare advice – but don’t let that put you off. Thankfully, Origins will also be providing some genuine experts, in the shape of its trained consultants. It will also donate £1 for every item sold on the day to LGFB.
Finally, the first 20 readers to buy tickets each receive an Origins goodie bag worth £75. Being a bossy boots, I persuaded them to include my favourite Incred-ible Spreadable Scrub (in my humble opinion, the best in the business), as well as Peace of Mind On-the-spot Relief, A Perfect World moisturiser and Clean Energy Cleansing Oil. The rest is up to you.
