A growing number of people are looking for ways to supplement their incomes as the cost of living soars.
There are various ways in which you can bring in a bit more money without spending too much time or effort – from cashback websites to car boot sales. Traffic on classifieds website Gumtree, which lists anything from homes to let to tax consul-tancy services, has increased by 46% in the past 12 months.
Tim Moss of comparison site money supermarket.com said: “As well as saving money, you need to look at ways of making money. A house is a tremendous asset so can you rent out a room or house share?”
Here we offer 10 income-generating tips:
PLACE ADS ON YOUR CAR
1You’ve seen them on buses, cabs and trains, but advertisers are also offering cash if you carry adverts on your car.
A car advert, also known as a “wrap”, is a high-quality adhesive vinyl film applied to the surfaces of your vehicle. It is temporary and can be removed without damage.
Comm-motion.com matches advertisers with registered users who submit details of their car, as well as some lifestyle details. Payment depends on how much of your car you wish to “wrap”. The “max-wrap” option covers your whole vehicle and will earn you up to £200 a month.
Or you could make up to £165 a month with the “classic-wrap” – ads on doors, side-panels, bonnet and boot, while “super-side plus” covers door panels and the bonnet earning you up to £130 a month.
REVIEW MUSIC
2 You can earn money by writing online music reviews on slicethe pie.com. Users, referred to as scouts can review tracks that are posted by the 10,000 or so registered artists. There are 70,000 registered reviewers on the site – over three times more than in last January.
Since its launch in June 2007, users have submitted over 1.5m reviews, earning around £100,000 in total.
Each review earns 3p although you can earn up to 12p per review if your score for each track matches the average score of everyone else who has rated it.
RENT OUT A ROOM
3 Over 18.2m homeowners have at least one empty room, according to Abbey. It says 388,000 homeowners already rent out one of their spare rooms, netting them a collective £1.1 billion annually.
Postings on Gumtree offering a room for rent have increased by 34% in the past six months. Although the amount of rent will depend on where you live, the average monthly asking price is £289, so you could raise £3,468 extra each year. What’s more, under the government’s “rent-a-room” scheme, you can receive up to £4,250 of rental income per year tax-free.
LET A FILM CREW IN
4 If you don't want to rent a room, you could temporarily hire out your property for use in filming or photo shoots. Last week Gumtree had a post offering use of a roof terrace in east London for £15 an hour. There are also specialist websites such as Lavishlocations.com, which list properties for use by advertisers and film production crews.
You can generally earn £500 a day for a photo shoot. If your house is deemed suitable or distinctive enough to appear in a major film, it could earn up to £2,500 a day.
HIRE OUT YOUR PARKING SPACE
5 You can make up to £200 a week by hiring out part of your drive or car parking space, according to Gumtree. How much you could charge depends on where you live, but the average is around £20 a week.
Claire Culshaw, 28, a marketing executive from Woking, Surrey, rents out her garage. She said: “It’s like having a second income, without the hassles of 9-5.” There are agencies, including letmepark.com and yourparkingspace.co.uk , that match motor-ists looking for regular parking slots with homeowners who have a spare space.
RECYCLE YOUR WARDROBE
6 If you have unwanted clothes, you can use auction websites such as eBay.co.uk and fashionexchange. co.uk to sell them. The latter has seen a threefold increase in traffic in the past three months, while registered users have doubled in the past week, said co-founder Henny Letailleur. Any income made through online auctions can be taxable if the transaction is deemed as trading.
DO ONLINE SURVEYS
7 Marketing agencies are keen to receive your opinions and will pay or offer discounts for filling in online surveys.
Surveys.com, an online community operated by GfK, a market-research firm, has joined ipoints.co.uk to offer rewards that can be exchanged with participating retailers including Boots, Currys and John Lewis. You can earn 25 points a minute with each survey taking five to ten minutes. Each point is usually worth half a penny. You can, for example, buy £15 worth of books at Amazon with 3,000 points.
USE A CASHBACK WEBSITE
8 Online shopping has continued to increase despite the credit crunch. Figures from IMRG, which monitors online retail activity, show that in the first six months of 2008, UK shoppers spent over £26.5 billion online – a 38% increase from the first half of 2007.
One of the most useful tools for online shoppers are cashback sites, offering a percentage as cashback on what you buy. Sites such as quidco.co.uk and greasy-palm.com offer cashback from retailers such as Tesco, Dixons and Carphone Warehouse. Last week, Quidco was offering 7% cashback from HMV, 5% from Marks & Spencer and up to 8% cashback from Waterstones.
MAKE YOUR CHILD A MODEL
9 Babies are sought after by advertisers so you can kick-start children’s savings by allowing them to be photographed. Baby modelling agencies such as Elisabeth Smith (elisabethsmith.co.uk) receive about 250 applications a week and accept around 5%. Children can earn £75 for a photo shoot or £135 for a film shoot.
GO TO CAR-BOOT SALES
10 Bargain hunters hoping to save money have helped to increase the number of visitors to car-boot sales.
More than 400 events have been added to carbootjunction.com since June last year. This has more than doubled the number of registered sales on the website to about 900. Sellers pay about £10 a pitch.
