Gordon Brown was told to his face last night that the threat to his leadership had gone.
George Howarth, the former minister who in the summer called for Mr Brown to stand down, stood before a packed meeting of Labour MPs and peers and told Mr Brown: “Hostilities are now over.”
The remark was greeted with loud cheers as most MPs agree that Mr Brown has improved his position with a strong conference performance, and his handling of the economic crisis.
The Prime Minister made a strong appeal for party unity and said it was time to take the fight to the Conservatives “who say one thing and do another.”
He added the polls suggested people’s minds were not made up and it was all to play for.
Reports from inside the meeting suggested there had been no criticism of the appointment of Peter Mandelson as Business Secretary.
Tony Lloyd, the PLP chairman, said the best renationalisation of the summer was the return of Mr Mandelson and Mr Brown joked that he was glad he had had his kidney treatment on the NHS.
Tom Watson, Cabinet Office minister, who briefed the press on the meeting said Mr Howarth’s had been warmly met. “It was a real signal we were back together.”
Until about a fortnight ago it had been predicted that the PLP gathering might signal the beginning of the end for the Prime Minister.
But in those three weeks Mr Brown had a good conference; the financial crisis has run almost out of control and he reshuffled his Cabinet, using the return of Mr Mandelson to obliterate any remaining threat from the Blairites.
The Prime Minister made a strong appeal for party unity and said it was time to take the fight to the Conservatives “who say one thing and do another.”
Mr Brown felt safe enough to announce that the Glenrothes byelection would be on November 6. A few weeks ago that was also seen as a potential tipping-point for Mr Brown in the event of an SNP victory.
The Nationalists remain favourites to take the seat but there is now at least talk that Labour could hold on.
The feeling at Westminster is that Mr Brown has been given a substantial breathing space that looks likely to take him through to next summer.
If Labour's position remains as dismal as it is now, he could even then face a threat. But given the pace of events on the financial and political front no one is making predictions that far ahead.

Labour has done well over the economy and has shown very strong leadership in tackling a mess made by the Tories in the 80's. Remember Yuppies? Greed is something Thatcher took great pride in introducing to the country. Labour is back on track and looking forward to 2012 and another Labour term.

"Mr Brown felt safe enough to announce that the Glenrothes byelection would be on November 6" - wasn't the announcement imminent anyway?
Surely the date is a bit of a clue - only 2 days after the American election will mean they can try to bury bad news on a busy news day.
Rob, B'ham, UK
"Take the fight to the Conservatives" he says.
He is suppose to be sorting out the economy after the mess he has made and all he can say is fight the Tories.
Asw, Hong Kong,
So all is sweetness and light. But there's just a little matter of the almighty mess the Labour government has made of the UK. O, I almost forgot, and an election in about 18 months. Now do they really think they have a hope in hells chance? I really don't think so!
D Case, Newquay,
Labour might be all pals together. They have yet to convince the voters of this country that doubling the tax of the lowest paid to 20% was a good thing.
I dare Mr Broon to tell us that the money has been used to keep bankers in the lifestyle they have been accustomed to living.
David Kinsley, Derby, UK
Strong handling of the economic crisis? Where, when, how the crisis is worsening despite Billions of pounds being thrown at the problem, so how can that be handling?
I think they are all afraid of Mandelson and desperate.
steve tea, manchester, cheshire
What's the point of a bloodbath before the election anyway? Even the Labour party must have worked out they're going to lose and anybody with half a brain will wait till afterwards.
(PS Mandy needed a new job anyway - his old one is coming to an end).

Cambell and Mandleson to beef up election team i dont think so .

Richard, London says Brown "destroy(ed) the British economy". This statement alone shows how narrow and ill-informed his political view. As the world economy crashes, Brown's political recovery is earned by his ability to keep Britain safe through this crisis and the turbulant times that follow.
Alastair, Looe,
What a joke !
The guy who has steered the party onto the rocks is not the one to save it but thats there business!
What is true is that Mr Boom and Bust is wrecking the country! If he had any guts he should stop dithering and get out now
eddy, Bolton,
Maybe - instead, the country is now at war with Brown and his government. And we will not capitulate.
Jeremy Poynton, Frome, England
So now that Brown has destroyed the British economy - George Howarth just shrugs his shoulders and says '...peoples minds were not made up and it was all to play for...'. I think you'll find George, that you and your incompetent shower are on the endangered species list.
Richard, London, UK
Ok until he has to put up taxes, otherwise who is going to pay for all this bank cock up? Us,as usual. Then his backbenchers will get jittery trying to sell it to their constituents, just like they did in our former colony over the Atlantic.
Personal survival is the only thing that motivates MPs.
james allen, manchester, england
Good. The more our leaders can focus on the country, the better it is for all of us. Hopefully the media can try to be more supportive too.
