Dimitar Berbatov met his agent in Bulgaria last night to try to force through his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Manchester United. The 27-year-old forward is on international duty for the match against Bosnia-Herzegovina tomorrow night and he is worried that United will try to sign Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the Holland striker, from Ajax if Tottenham refuse to lower their £30 million asking price. “We’re entering a crucial period of negotiations,” Emil Dantchev, Berbatov’s agent, said.
Zenit St Petersburg have told Tottenham that they will not sell Andrei Arshavin, the Russia playmaker, for less than £20 million. “It is take it or leave it,” Dennis Lachter, Arshavin’s agent, said. “That is the final price.”
Branislav Ivanovic wants to join AC Milan on loan, even though Juventus also want him. The Serbia defender has not made a first-team appearance at Chelsea since his £9.7 million transfer from Lokomotiv Moscow in January. “He will probably be playing for Milan,” Vlado Borozan, his agent, said.
Manchester City are confident that they can sign Mikaël Silvestre, the France defender, from Manchester United for £750,000.
Newcastle United have joined West Bromwich Albion in the race to sign Oscar Trejo, the Argentine striker, from Real Mallorca.
Long shots
Reports in Spain last night suggested that Blackburn Rovers had made a £9.5 million bid for Joaquín, the Valencia winger.
Fulham are interested in Dickson Etuhu, the Sunderland and Nigeria midfield player.
Dead certs
Emmanuel Adebayor has signed a new contract worth about £80,000 a week that will keep him at Arsenal until 2012. The Togo forward had flirted with Milan and Barcelona during the summer.
Andrew Davies, the Southampton defender, has agreed to join Stoke City in a £1.3 million deal. Southampton are also set to sell Andrew Surman, the England Under-21 midfield player, to Reading for £2.5 million.
Rangers have agreed to loan Andy Webster, the defender, to Bristol City until January.

There is n point in keeping players who have no interest in playing for you. Levy has always provided the funds to bring in quality players every season. Spurs just can't hold on to them due to inconsistent performances and the lack of silverware.
Corey, Miami, USA
Not Spurs fault. Megabucks clubs poach players they want.
Only brilliant O'Neill survived poaching re Barry.
Spurs must sign comparable stars. Should be: Villa, Arshavin, Corluka.
Whole transfer/poach/tap up - dodgy/illegal agent system needs overhaul by FA with massive fines for breaches.
Leigh Vernier, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia
Can't agree with you more Andrew. Levy has lost the plot, write the season off after 1 game? Same old same old.
Jeremy, Farnham,
Sorry folks, don't agree. If the proceeds of selling 3 players at well negotiated prices higher than their worth are then used to strengthen the team (jury out but I believe it has been e.g Modric,Woodgate etc) then that is good for the club in the long term. On balance Levy's done well.
Nick, London, uk
spurs fans shouldnt worry. as long as ramos can get the defence solid spurs will have their best season since the 80s. giovani dos santos will make you droul, bent as a lone striker will reproduce his charlton form modric and bentley will create infinite chances. huddlestone 2b midfield genral uneed
will, grimsby, uk
As a spurs fan i totally agree ( Andrew, Bristol) with last comment. I mean utd refused ronaldo to go to real! So why cant levy say no and mean no? he has two years left on his contract!! The basic truth of it all is that we have become a joke, along with the statements of enforced sales from levy!

In selling Keane to Liverpool and both Carrick and Berbatov to Manchester Utd, Spurs have confirmed one thing, Keith Burkinshaw was right in his criticism of the club when he walked out over 20 years ago, stating "there used to be a football club there", now it´s just a money making business.
Steven Porter, Barcelona, Spain
In selling Carrick and probably Berbatov to Man.U.and Keane to Liverpool with no comparable replacements,Spurs are clearly signalling that they have no serious intention of challenging the top 4 clubs. All Spurs will be doing is widening the gap between the top 4 and the rest of the Premiership.
Andrew, Bristol, UK
