Mike Ashley, the embattled owner of Newcastle United, could be offered an
early opportunity to follow Kevin Keegan out of St James’ Park after it
emerged that there is fresh interest in the Tyneside club from abroad.
It is becoming increasingly likely that Reliance Communications, the
Indian-based telecoms giant, will seek formal talks with the Barclays
Premier League club’s board with a view to a £220 million takeover. However,
of greater significance to those furious Newcastle supporters determined to
oust Ashley is the revelation that Anil Ambani, the owner of Reliance, has
identified Keegan as the only credible managerial candidate capable of
moving the club forward.
Less than 24 hours after Keegan announced his departure from St James’ Park
as manager for the second time, the odds on him being reappointed had fallen
to 14-1. Ambani is a great believer in continuity and his representatives
are aware of the standing of the so-called “Geordie Messiah” among the
club’s supporters. He was first linked with a buyout of Newcastle last
month, but his representatives denied suggestions of a £260 million move. It
is understood that Ambani balked at that price because Newcastle had failed
to strengthen the squad.
However, Reliance has followed developments at the club and the team that it
assembled to investigate the viability of a bid believes that the time is
right to test Ashley’s resolve. Aware of the vitriol aimed at Newcastle’s
owner by fans who feel that Keegan is an innocent victim of mismanagement,
the Indians are ready to move fast with an offer that more realistically
matches their assessment of the club’s value. Ashley paid £130 million for
Newcastle in July 2007 and wiped out debts estimated at £80 million, but
rumours persisted that the businessman was seeking a sale after becoming
disillusioned with his investment.
Highly placed sources suggest that Reliance and others were invited to bid in
excess of £250 million for Newcastle this summer. Those sources said
yesterday that Ambani was ready to revive interest in his favourite Premier
League club, with Keegan at the centre of an ambitious public-relations
policy aimed to get disillusioned season ticket-holders and deserting
businesses back on board.
Ambani will appeal to Newcastle fans, who crave serious investment in the
team come January. The world’s sixth-richest man boasts a fortune of £21
billion and it is understood that Keegan, should he be persuaded to return
for a third term as manager at St James’ Park, would be handed at least £100
million to strengthen the squad in the new year.
The supporters’ mood was not helped yesterday when Alan Shearer ruled himself
out of involvement with the club. The former club captain said: “I would
like to be a manager at some stage in my career, but that means controlling
the players that go in and the players that go out.
“I don’t think I would be comfortable working within a structure with a
director of football who was picking and choosing the players for me.”

Obviously Ashley's judgement can be questioned, buying Newcastle for a start.
Hiram, Pinner,
To Dave B in York, Most of Britain is owned by people whose ancestors slept with Kings and the rest of us scrape together a living. What's the difference? Good luck to Alliance and KK.
Ian M Jones, Reading, UK
Dave B, as an Indian, I can reassure you. That the millions of Indians living in abject poverty have been reduced by many millions thanks to the Reliance Corporation. You really ought to see how much investment they have put into Indian industry. Their financial accounts are there for all to see.
Arjun Singh, Mumbai, India
I think this is a refelection of what the great egaletarian game has become, ego driven and money oreintated.Do's anyone else share the sense that the whole rotten ediface is on the point of collapse. It seems to me to reflect all that is bad in Western society exported around the world.
John Heron p, Dover, UK
well its about time kk put his mouth into action and got involved with a consortium like this as he is the self styled king of toon.
its the only way forward.
cmon kk come out of your ayshire wilderness.
andy, frome, uk
Mike Ashley is turning out to be someone who's judgement is unsound. Who in their right mind would have, earlier this year, bet on bank share going up or would have expected a man of Keegan's caliber to allowed Wise to tell him what players to buy and sell. Ashley is a fool.
D Case, Newquay,
I am a Leeds United supporter, but would love Newcastle to obtain the same financial backing like Manchester City have had over the past week, and challenge for the title, with Kevin Keegan in total charge.
John, Blackpool, UK
Well what can I say?? If this did prove to be true, then I hope & pray that Ashley has the common sense to not rush in a new manager, until the club could be sold.
We've had cowboys for years running the club - I would certainly welcome the indians now...
Tony Wilson, South Shields, UK
Its my birthday today and God has given me the best present EVER - a multi-billionaire and a huge transfer budget and KK.
Face it - KK is an expensive manager - thrift, patience and caution thrown to the wind. Buy big, buy often & attack without mercy.
The Messiah will return for the APOCALYPSE!
Angus Di Griso, Guisborough, England
Unfortunately, taking into account Ashley's prior decisions, I doubt this takeover will happen. After all it's in the best interest of the club as a business and footballing power, the players, the fans, the city of Newcastle and his 'senior' friends who appear to control the club!
Mark, Newcastle, UK
Phil from The Wirral
You say the hte other teams have no chance (if they don't have a billionaire backer) but when was the last time we went into a premiership season not knowing that only 2 or 3 teams could win it ? Even in the 70's the League was dominated by a small number of teams.
RD, Almeria, Spain
In the end there will be half a dozen clubs, owned by billionaires, who have all the good players. The rest of the "poor" clubs will be cannon fodder. The game is in freefall and I'm bailing out.
Ernest, Wigan,
You couldn't make it up!!!
Rob, London,
Andrew from Newcastle: You took the words out of my mouth!! Shearer's point is just echoing what ANY manager would think. After all, you wouldn't employ a chauffeur to drive you around and take the wheels off the car, then wonder why you're not moving would you Mike?... Mike, would you??.... Mike...
Paul, Consett, UK
Events at NUFC are beyond farce. Glen Roeder was right in describing it as tragic. But a Billionaire owner is not really the solution at St James Park. A sensible manager making sensible decisions for a sensible board - in it for the long haul. Look at Arsenal?
Will clouston, Newcastle, England
millions of Indians and Arabs live in abject poverty yet their countrymen splash money on football clubs, whos players are rich beyond a poor mans dreams. Disgusting
Dave b , york,
Ambani or a similar like-minded owner with keegan re-appointed as a proper Manager would be the only way to get the club back on its feet and running in the right direction. Keegan brings what no other Manager can do, belief, passion and love,he is also respected worldwide.
andrew, newcastle upon tyne, england
Hull City could do with one (a billionarie that is) as well if there is one to spare!
Dave , White Salmon, WA , USA
We really do hope and pray!!! As soon as Ashley, Wise and Llambias are out the sooner we can move forward as a club. Our fans have waited so long for a cup, and we certainly won't be winning one under this deluded lot!! Anil Ambani please buy NUFC!! We Geordies need you more than anyone!!!
Lewy, Newcastle, England
Just a quick message, after being a loyal stoke city supporter for 30+ years and seeing the situation at Newcastle where it seems billionare's are soon to be trying to buy the Club from Ashley, wonder if one would like to buy Stoke ??
Dougie Howzer, Newcastle, England
I have to feel sorry for all those other clubs out there. Unless they get bought up by billionaires there's little hope for them.
All this money is destroying the sport by narrowing the competition to a select few.
Phill, The Wirral, England
We hope and pray!
Ambani for sure... But I thnk it may be a bit ambitious trying to bring KK back!
Lets hope this is true!
Danny, Newcastle,
A Perfect Christmas prensent for the Newcastle Fans (Anil Ambani) as Owner of " NUFC ".
kevin murray, Newcastle, England
we can only hope . perfect time todo it .
