Frank Lampard has insisted that he is happy at Chelsea and that he has not been affected by speculation on the eve of the Champions League final linking him to a transfer to Inter Milan.
Italian sources claimed that Lampard has discussed contractual terms with the Italian giants but the England midfielder today said that he wants to talk to Chelsea about his existing deal - which has one year to run.
“I’m very happy at Chelsea, it’s been the best days of my career," Lampard said. "My future will be sorted out in the summer. Myself and the club have said we want to speak about my contract in the summer. Now is not the time to think about that.”
The former West Ham player is hoping to make it a family double by helping Chelsea to beat Manchester United at the Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow, having watched his uncle Harry Redknapp lead Portsmouth to the FA Cup on Saturday.
“I was at Wembley to see Harry win it and it was a great day for the family,” Lampard said. “For what he has given to the game, he deserves that. I’m sure all the Redknapp family will be supporting me tomorrow. It would be great to make it a family double.”
Lampard said the match will be a defining event in several of his team-mates' careers, while admitting that he had experienced a similar moment of his own in the semi-final, second leg against Liverpool when he scored a penalty in his first game after his mother's death. “That was a big moment for me but tomorrow is the defining moment for the team," he said.
"Some of our players have won the Champions League, a lot of us haven’t. My defining moment will be if I can be among the team lifting the cup, that will top anything I did in semi-final.”
Avram Grant, the Chelsea manager, has also been subject to speculation on his future, with reports suggesting he could lose his job in the summer but he refused to comment on his situation today.
Asked today if the uncertainty could force him to quit, he said: “Why? If it was a normal season for Chelsea we would be on vacation, we are here because we are here for the most important game for clubs in the world, the Champions League final. You need to respect everyone at Chelsea and ask questions about the final, not about me."
