Gareth Barry has stated his case to be allowed to join Liverpool in talks with Martin O'Neill, the Aston Villa manager, but if the England midfield player succeeds in securing a move to Merseyside, Xabi Alonso does not intend to be the man to make way for a new arrival.
Alonso's future at Liverpool is uncertain, with Rafael Benítez prepared to consider selling the 26-year-old to a Spanish or Italian club to raise funds for reinforcements, but if the Spain midfield player has his way he will stay at Anfield.
“I think I will be here next season even if Barry comes,” Alonso said yesterday. “He would bring good competition and he would be more than welcome. He can play different positions and if he plays in midfield then I could play with him. I have no problem with that. My situation is that I am a Liverpool player and I am very happy here. I signed a new contract last year and that meant I wanted to stay.”
Benítez spoke to Alonso on Saturday after reports in a Spanish newspaper that the player was a target for Real Madrid. “He never told me he wanted me to stay because he doesn't need to tell me that,” Alonso said. “He just wanted to clarify something the story had said. If he wanted me to leave I would prefer him to be honest and say, ‘Xabi, we are thinking about other players and you are not going to play that much.' Then I would look for a different option. But he still thinks I can play an important role.”
O'Neill, who has been irked by Benítez's approach to transfer negotiations, maintains that Barry will be staying at Villa Park. “We've spoken to Gareth and everyone wishes very strongly that he will stay,” the Villa manager said. “The main aim for the chairman and me is to try and keep Gareth at the club.”
Liverpool have offered Sammy Lee, their former player and coach, a role as assistant manager to Benítez. Lee has been without a club since losing his job as Bolton Wanderers manager in October.

I prefer Dani Alves if we can get him to play our right back!
Abu Salim, Australia,
I think Barry does not offer anything we dont have at the moment, unless he plays left midfield, otherwise we need one pacy right or left back with left and right wingers.....why not go fo bentley/Agbonlahor and make Babel a centre forward with Nino...
We should keep Crouch.
nicholas, Centurion, South Africa
Alonso is similiar to Stevie Gerrad whilst Barry Gareth, if recruited, is a supplement to other department... Liverpool usually wins through midfield but what they need now, with Torres as striker, is good winger and maybe another good striker as what MU is doing now
LP, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Barry is a good player but we have enough centre mid-fielders. Maybe Rafa will play him on the left side (or even left back)? We need 2 strong pacy full backs, a creative forward to partner Torres & a right-winger. Leiva has had a decent first season & has been a success.
Steve, Shannon, Ireland
Yer gotta agree with most on here, Iv said for ages why are the big clubs even interested in barry? liverpool are sorted in that position+if Rafa needed remindin of his class, then alonso's performances in the champs league should of given him that!
Liverpool need to get bently 1st then a forward
Al White, pompey, uk
Stephen and Lee are right of course. Alonso would have to go if Barry came in. But I suspect Rafa hasn't been too impressed with him this season and I reckon he's on his way. With Agger coming back CB looks secure but we're still short down the flanks and we absolutely need another top-class striker
Roger, Milan, Italy
Leiva is never going to be good enough ????? Obviously you haven't been watching the same matches as the rest of us. Lucas has been putting in some good performances and is certainly looking like a bright prospect for the future. Plessis has played 2 matches not enough to make any judgement yet.
Sean Blythe, Leeds, Uk
As for Barry - good player but he really is never going to improve or give anything different to Liverpool. Not a world class player and I'm doubtful whether he is even good enough to play for Liverpool.
Sean Blythe, Leeds, Uk
Gareth Barry will play left midfield not central midfield as everyone is thinking
dee, glasgow,
Why Gareth Barry???
we have enough decent midfielders and id say thats the one area Liverpool match any premiership side on!
i think we need to bolster the defence up we look really vulnerable at the back .............like any title winning team you start building from a solid defence
mike, Ermelo, SA
I'm sorry but Leiva is never going to be good enough to hold a place down, no pace doesn't put his foot in and doesn't score goals, who would you play him in place of ? Plessis on the other hand looks to have a great future. Barry would be a great addition.
Lee , Warrington,
We also need 2 attacking full backs with pace, a top quality striker as if Nando was out we'd be short up front, and someone with a spark to create something out of nothing.
Lee , Warrington,
Wholey agree Stephen. What with the small possibility that English players will be worth more in the future with any FIFA ruling, I'm suprise Benitez is so keen to offload Crouch, esp as Voronin has been so poor. I would also like to see Bentley at Anfield next season.
Lardinio, Hailsham,
G. Barry is a great player but with Gerrard, Mascherano, Leiva, Plessis & Alonso there is more than enough strength going forward, solidity and creativity. Liverpool should be looking at their wing backs & a forward if Crouch goes, speaking of which its a shame that Benitez does not believe in him.
