SIR ALEX FERGUSON is considering legal action against the Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy as the row over Manchester United’s pursuit of striker Dimitar Berbatov threatens to escalate into an ugly confrontation between the clubs. Ferguson is incandescent about a statement by Levy in which he branded the United manager “unbelievably hypocritical” and accused him of “sheer arrogance”.
Levy has also made a complaint to the Premier League regarding Ferguson’s conduct in his attempts to sign Berbatov, for whom United have bid £20m. United indicated last night that this would be vigorously contested.
At the centre of the argument are quotes attributed to Ferguson in The Sun, which he categorically denies having given. The newspaper quoted Ferguson as saying he was confident of signing Berbatov. Levy interpreted this as “interference” with regard to his player, labelling it “probably one of the worst offences by any manager in the Premier League to date”.
However, Ferguson, speaking in Cape Town after United drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs in the first game of their South African tour, hit back in the strongest terms. “It is going to be very embarrassing for Tottenham because they have based their complaint on a story in The Sun. I don’t know where they got these quotes from, but it certainly wasn’t me,” Ferguson said.
“I haven’t seen [Levy’s statement] yet. I have just been given the gist of it by our press officer. But I’m sure our legal people will be looking at it.”
Unless it can be proved that Ferguson made the comments in dispute, Levy could find himself defending a defamation case. However, last night Tottenham said that they stood firmly by the statement.
In all likelihood, the row has strengthened United’s chances of signing Berbatov, who joined Spurs in May 2006 for £10.9m. Levy was determined to play hardball over the 27-year-old Bulgarian striker, for whom he is thought to be seeking £30m, but he may have to be more accommodating should he find himself trying to persuade Ferguson not to sue.
Barcelona are also interested in Berbatov and are reported to be ready to offer Tottenham £24m for his services.

You have to remeber if the munich disaster never happened then the likes of Real Madrid would never have won the european cup th 6 or 7 times, biggest or best club in the world what do Real think, remember even b4 the tragic disaster MAN U were pullin the biggest crowds the football game had ever seen

Mr. Levy's statement, claims Spurs have evidence going back to last summer including direct contact with the player and (or) his agent. As in the Arnesen case before, they would not go to the league without proof more valid then the Sun's story. Also, waiting for SAF to explain how DL is different.

I am great admirer of Berbatov,he will be worth every penny that Man United would pay for him,his style of play is made for the Red Devils,he knows that, with the supply of the ball from the likes of Scholes,Rooney,Carrick,Giggs ect, what can i say,Berbatov's goal tally in a season will be,WOW
SHAHID RASHID, Hudderfield, england,UK
How can Berbatov be worth 30mil when Fernando Torres cost Liverpool 24mil, clearly Torres is a much better player than Berbatov and Keane put together. Its overpriced! ManU Should ditch this mess and find a more solid and consistant striker somewhere else and for less.
Kyle, Randburg, South Africa
stuff the sun article, what about approaching players agents without permission, that is against the rules full stop. The infuriating thing is the fact the feguson has had the exact same thing done to him by real, and now sees no harm in doing the same thing to someone else
Points deduction please

Berba Barca.
Sell him where he has no choice. The club is the most important thing. Selling to united would be total embaressment for Levy.
Fergie suing for what? He's been trying to get his greasy mitts on Berba since the player turned him down to join Spurs, attritional warfare. Period.

" just becuase manu made a bid they cant tap up berbatov "
UEFA rules say that, yes, although I don't think it's what you meant. As long as you make a formal approach, it's fine to talk to the platyer even if your bid isn't accepted. No tapping-up here...
Josh, lONSON,
Ferguson's response is pure spin. The Sun article was only a minor aspect of Levy's charge, which related to Spurs holding documentary evidence of continuing attempts by United and Liverpool to tap-up Berbatov and Keane, after Spurs categorically refused them permission.

Spurs never tires of not offering decent contracts to players. With Mido the gamble worked-he didn't do as well at 'Boro. With Jermain Defoe, that sidelining lost us a striker who went on to shine elsewhere. The same is about to happen with Berbatov, who basically saved the team from the drop in 07.

Berbatov has moments of class and can be a superb player. He also heads lots of stuff over the bar and goes missing frequently during games or even for entire matches. He thinks he is a lot better than he is. Spurs will take Man Utd's millions and hopefully spend them on another partner for Robbie.

levy today said he has substantial evidence that Man utd officials approached berbatov's agent without the approval of spurs.Manutd might have made a bid but levy wasn't interested in selling berbatov to manu right from the begining. just becuase manu made a bid they cant tap up berbatov
Nick, chennai, India
You Man U people preferring Huntelaar over Berbatov have no idea what you're on about. The guy is a genius. I doubt Cantona would have scored much at Spurs, neither would he have masked his contempt for some of the the troglodytic play around him. I;m a Spurs fan and i wish Berba well on his way up.
Tom S, Chengdu,
The only hypocrisy is that of Levy for pretending that neither Berbatov nor Keane are for sale, when in a few days he will have to eat his words and admit that his sole ambitions at Spurs are running a business (in which all is fair) not securing Champions League football!
Alastair, Rye, UK
Its different. if you look at all the comments from Fergie he never mentions Berbatov by name until asked explicitly by the press if he has made a bid for him. Thats not unserttling its a statement of fact. As is the fact Madrid have never tabled a bid for Ronaldo, yet try to unsettle him.

you would'nt be bertie magoo the bitter blue would you. Berbatov has told Spurs he wants to leave, United have made a bid.Did'nt City make noises about Ronaldinho, they certainly did. I for one dont want Berbatov to come to United,Huntelaar is a better player by far.
Paul, Salford, England
I agree with Matthew. Huntelaar, or any of the other young strikers we saw at the Euros, would be much cheaper and better. As for the hypocrisy, Utd made a reasonable offer, and did NOT go on a public crusade like Real did, so whats the big deal? It's business, for god's sake. GROW UP, Mr. Levy!!
Mike, Spokane, WA, USA
More to the point what are United thinking? Berbatov - 27, petulant. not a great scoring record and likely to cost £24-25M. Huntelaar - 24, wants a move and wants to play for United, much better scoring record, younger, more maleable and United can probably get him for £16-18M. It's a no-brainer
Matthew, Brighton,
Come to us, Come to united, This is your dream Dimitar, We have been waiting for you!.
Fulfill your dream......We are the richest club in the world, and the most valuable club in the world, join the champions of England and the champions of europe. And soon to be champions of the world!. We await 4u

I would have thought Levy was smart enuff not to believe everything he reads in the papers; especially the tabloids. Starting a legal action, based on an article in The Sun, is just plain stupid.
Bisa Amoo-Gottfried, Purley,
The only double standards i see are those by idiots who believe what they read in newspapers and then start ranting about morals and football. Players will and always have been courted by other clubs whether its Sunday league or the EPL. No one can occupy the moral high ground on this issue.
Baneville, Birmingham, UK
fergie has always had double standards crying an moaning about real madrids pursuit of ron the diver yet did exactley the same in pursuing owen hargreaves an now berbatov if i was levy i would tell fergie and united to forget it as they dont want to sell to premiership rivals as he also did .
alan ebbrell, manchester, england
wrong Stephen, he has said he wants to join Manchester United, Levy admitted so in his statement, he doesn't want to join some foreign club.
Neil, manchester,
somehow I doubt Levy will be worried about SAF suing. I think Spurs will sell Berbatov to a foreign club.
