Djibril Cisse, the former Liverpool striker, is set to join Sunderland on a season-long loan deal, according to Pape Diouf, the chairman of the French club.

Diouf claimed that Sunderland and Marseille had reached an “agreement in principle” over Cisse, but added that “several details remain to be sorted out to make the loan official”.

Cisse, 27, had said earlier in the summer he was looking for a return to the Premier League. He originally moved to Anfield in 2004 - winning a Champions League medal with Liverpool a season later - but failed to make an impression at the club and scored just 15 times in two injury-plagued seasons before leaving in June 2006.
