If the British want any consolation, Lamaze's horse was named Hickstead. That brings an end to the equestrianism in Hong Kong and, fortunately, the feared typhoon did not ruin an entertaining spectacle.

1642BST Beezie Madden of the US tries the same short cut over the hedge as her compatriot and it pays off to secure her a bronze in the jump-off. No whte jump-off for the final.

1640BST In the equestrianism in the third-place jump-off Meredith Michaels-Beerbaum, of Germany, is leading, but McLain Ward of the US tried a sneaky, but legal, manoeuvre to gain time by cutting a corner and jumping over some fence decorations. But to no avail as he crashed into the final fence.

1630BST It is gold for women's footballers (or soccer players) as they beat Brazil 1-0 with a goal in the first period of extra-time. The US hold on to the title won in Athens, while Brazil's quest for a football gold continues. The men fell in the semis, the women went one better, but that will be little consolation.

1626BST The US hit the post with three minutes remaining in the women's football final. That would have sealed the gold for the defending champions.

1625BST In the equestrianism, not only is there a jump-off for gold, but also for bronze between about seven riders. Riders are ranked on penalties and then time.

1613BST Eric Lamaze, of Canada, is the last rider with a hope of dethroning Bengtsson. And he goes clear with no penalties to force a jump-off for gold with Bengtsson.

1605BST Things had been held up in the equestrianism in Hong Kong after one of the jumps sprang a leak and the ground around it had to be mopped up. In the women's football final, the US have taken a lead against Brazil in the first half of extra time.

1550BST Tim Stockdale (not Nick Skelton as the caption said) on Corlato has had a poor second round in the showjumping and after being in first position at one point is now out of the medals down in 11th. Meanwhile, Denis Lynch, the Ireland rider who has been provisionally suspended after his horse failed a drug test, has protested his innocence, saying that the positive test came from a Deep Heat-like cream called Equiblock - that contains capsaicin, which is the banned drug, as an ingredient - on his horse. He said that he had been using it as part of his preparations for some time.

1547BST In the women's football final, it is scoreless as the game goes into stoppage time. A US player was just through on the keeper and tried to lob her but the keeper just got her fingertips to the ball to keep her country in the hunt for gold.
