Andy Murray has shrugged off suggestions that he will be too tired for the crucial Davis Cup match with Austria after being drawn to face Jurgen Melzer in the penultimate rubber on Sunday.
The showdown pits the teams' top players against each other and could decide the World Group relegation play-off tie, which is being staged on Wimbledon's Court No 1. Murray returns after his run to the US Open final, and Melzer has claimed the Scot might find it hard to readjust to Davis Cup tennis.
"Andy isn't in an easy position because the whole country expects him to win the Davis Cup by himself," Melzer said. "After playing such a great grand slam I imagine it would be tough to get your head clear and focus on the next one. It's a big one.
"Britain want to be in the World Group so there's a lot of pressure on his shoulders. Let's see how he copes with that on the weekend."
However, Murray, now the world No 4 dismissed those suggestions. "I'm confident I'll be able to handle the pressure," he said. "I don't think there's a lot of pressure on me. Jurgen doesn't have a particularly good Davis Cup record," said the 21-year-old.
Alex Bogdanovic will get Britain underway as they bid to avoid dropping into the Europe/Africa Zone next year when he opens the tie against Melzer tomorrow.
Murray finishes tomorrow's schedule with a clash against Alexander Peya before opening Sunday's schedule against Melzer. Bogdanovic, the British No 2, and Peya close the tie on Sunday afternoon.
Ross Hutchins has been chosen to partner Jamie Murray in Saturday's doubles with Julian Knowle and Melzer selected by Austria. Britain and Austria have met ten times previously in the Davis Cup with Britain leading the series 7-3.
