Andy Murray drew Great Britain level in their Davis Cup play-off against Austria with a straight sets victory over Alexander Peya. Murray cruised to a 6-4 6-1 6-3 win after Alex Bogdanovic had falled to Jurgen Melzer earlier in the afternoon
Murray broke the Austrian in the first game and seemed at home adjusting to the demands of grass after his success during the hard court season. World number 164 Peya took only one game off the Scot in the second set, though he did break in the third.
"It was good," Murray said. "He competed well and fought the whole match but it felt pretty comfortable. I knew that I was expected to win this match so I wanted to get off to a quick start.
"As the match went on, I felt I was moving a lot better. You don't want to get behind on grass as it's tough to break serve."
The match was little more than a stroll in the sunshine and the only blip came when Paya broke the Murray serve in the third set.
Murray was already a break up having combined a deft lob with a vicious forehand to move 4-2 up.
But Murray was never in any danger of a Peya comeback and regained the break advantage immediately with a powerful back-hand drive.
Murray served out the victory and drew Britain level at 1-1 heading into the doubles tomorrow.
