Roger Federer has withdrawn from the Stockholm Open after announcing that he is to take a break from the sport.
The world No 2, who was diagnosed with glandular fever in January, said he was unsure if he would play again before the end of the year but added that he needed a rest if he was to remain at the top of the game in the coming years.
"2008 has been a tough year for me as I was always playing catch up after being diagnosed with mononucleosis at the beginning of the year," he said.
"I feel fortunate to be healthy again, but I want to remain at the top of the game for many more years to come and go after the number one ranking again. In order to do that, I need to get a proper rest and get strong again so that I am 100 per cent fit for the remainder of the year or next year."
"At this point, I am not sure when I will be ready to play again, but I hope to be back at some point before the end of the year," Federer said.
Federer won his 13th Grand Slam title last month, taking his fifth consecutive US Open title after a difficult year in which he has lost finals at Wimbledon and French Open and lost his No 1 ranking to Rafael Nadal. His participation in the Madrid Masters later this month is in serious doubt as his entry to the Swiss Indoors in Basel. He had also been due to play in the Paris Masters and the season-ending Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai.

Roger:
You are smart to take a break and re-energize yourself.
You showed great courage playing through a serious bout of mononucleosis. It isonly your extreme fitness level that allowed you to compete at all.
A very amazing year-end finish. I admire your skill almost as much as your character.
John, Peterborough, Canada
Oh God, please do NOT quit. You ARE tennis.
I look forward to seeing you on Centre Court in 2009. And you will win!

Chris, London, United Kingdom
Roger, you are an inspiration for all of the tennis world. You are the Greatest of All Time, regardless of what the naysayers might state. Get well soon, and I hope to see the 4 Majors in your possession by the end of next year! Go RF.
Daniel, Dallas, United States
The break is really a must in his situation. Somebody must've told him he can't win with mono if he doesn't take it easy for a while. Actually, he should've done it at the beginning of '08, but has been in denial since and kept on going. Hope he's all right & will return all guns blazing. Go Roger!!
Waldek, Zielona Gora, Poland
Roger, you are a fantastic player and ambassador for the game of tennis. Please, please, please - take all the time you need to be as fit and and healthy as possible before you play again.
Best of luck and congratulations on the US Open win!

James, Federer has recently claimed the US Open crown. No matter under what circumstances, thats a big achievement and suggests he is doing fine without Roache.
You deserve the break Roger, although when you return you will have a fight on your hands.
